Dan found these tracks in his backyard at noon today, leading up from a
partially-frozen spot on the edge of the pond.

We (formerly Nashaway Trackers) are a group of loosely connected nature lovers who enjoy sharing our observations and discoveries about the fauna and flora of the northeastern US. Most of us are especially interested in mammal tracks and sign, but we also post about birds, insects, plants, etc.
I am going to guess Great Blue Heron fishing at the edge of the pond...
ReplyDeleteWe looked out the window to see this great blue heron climbing up the pond bank to shore. He much preferred to walk on areas where the snow had already melted, but I did find this one set of tracks.
ReplyDeleteThis time of year, when most of the pond is frozen, I often see mink and heron working the sunny side of the pond, where there's still a bit of open water. Presumably they are hoping to catch a last meal out of the pond before it ices up completely.
