Otters on Ice

Lars is posting photos of 1/21/09 on the northern most section of Delaney Complex/Stow. I found many holes in the ice, and a variety of otter slides. Two examples shown, plus a bounding snow track, too.

  1. I found a bounding snow track very similar to the first one Lars posted above in the wetlands behind our house. In deeper powder it seems the otter can't just slide along, and has to propel itself out of the snow and slide a bit, before sinking back in and repeating the bound. It makes for a very unique pattern of track depth in the snow - almost like a saw tooth.
